Activities — Derecho a la Vivienda Lanzarote

Activities

This is the living page of the protest. Every day we tell here what has been done in the park and what comes next, with the date first and the most recent at the top. The news about us also goes here, next to the activity it comes from.

To ask for the floor you raise your hand, respect the speaker and wait for the moderation to give you the turn. What is decided goes into public minutes that protect the privacy of participants and of the people affected.

Next calls

  1. The Assembly on Radio Faycán

    09:00

Live interview about the protest and what comes next. Listen and share it.

  2. Assembly at Parque José Ramírez Cerdá

    19:30

The struggle takes a new shape: the working groups and the assemblies are more active than ever, at the park. We organise, inform and act. Join in and take part.

  3. Arrecife town council session (expected date)

The movement asks to speak at the council session. Any neighbour can register a request addressed to the mayor's office for the Assembly to take the floor: the more requests, the better. The date of the session is yet to be confirmed. If you want to file a request, write to derechoviviendalanzarote@gmail.com and we will send you the template.

  4. General strike for housing

Called across the whole of Spain; in Lanzarote the General Strike Committee prepares it.

What has happened

  1. General Assembly and closing of the camp

    19:30

The tents came down and the General Assembly gathered the resolutions of the four groups: the protest goes on in assemblies, working groups, council sessions and the general strike.

“Transformamos la protesta” poster: call for 13 October at 19:30 in the park
  2. The struggle transforms

    18:00

Collective performance recorded on video to see the camp off, and at 19:30 a working day of the four groups: La Casa de Todas, Communication, Tenants' Union and Strike Committee prepare Tuesday's resolutions.

The last morning of the camp: the tents under the pergola, one reading “Fewer holiday lets, more neighbours”, with the San Gabriel castle behind
  3. Popular “enyesque” for housing

An open day from morning to evening in the park: a crochet workshop (11:00), children's storytelling (12:00), a shared meal at 13:30 with whatever each person brought (lentils, chickpeas, vegetable paella, snacks, fruit), the “Tocar las lapas” limpet-shell workshop (15:00), the “Canarian letters” workshop (16:00) and the talk “Take care, comrade: a small guide to keeping your sanity” (17:00). In the evening, a reading from Alerta de patera with its author, and a small library that grows with what people bring (the “Library and leisure” box). The “Everyone's square” sign went up, “Calle Gama” was painted on cardboard and the “We need” board listed what is needed each day. Cardboard was requested for new signs and, late at night, the Polka for housing arrived, which is now sung in the park.

  4. VI Citizens' Assembly

One week of mobilisation and the sixth day of protest in the park. With rain halfway through, the assembly agreed to carry on, to create a commission to reorganise the space (rest, food, meeting and information areas), to open a social guidance point, to devote Monday to the working groups, to support the general strike of 11 November, to take the demands to the sessions of Arrecife's council and the island Cabildo, and to create a wiki and a community archive to keep the memory of all this. Public minutes of the VI Assembly (PDF, in Spanish). That same night the band Vera Fauna let the Assembly's banners be shown during their concert at Arrecife en Vivo.

  5. An eviction stopped

The Assembly accompanied a family that could lose their home. The eviction was halted under the housing decree. Because nobody should face the fear of losing their home alone.

  6. The by-law and the fines

The local police warned that the park is a work by César Manrique and a listed heritage site, and fines of up to 4,500 euros were mentioned. The answer was the same as on day one: it is not a camp, it is a peaceful gathering to claim the right to housing, protected by article 21 of the Spanish Constitution. We are not camping, we are protesting so that nobody throws us out of our home.

  7. Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 October — The first assemblies in the park

Daily meetings, working groups and Wednesday's assembly at 20:00 to decide the next actions. Neighbours and shops in the centre started bringing coffee, food, access to toilets and whatever was needed.

  8. The protest begins

After the rally, Sunday's march and two assemblies, the first tents go up under the pergola of the Parque José Ramírez Cerdá and the group La Casa de Todas is born to keep the space going.
